The team at Story Events are looking forward to taking to the streets over August Bank Holiday weekend for Europe’s biggest street party, Notting Hill Carnival.
What it is – Notting Hill Carnival has become one of the world’s most renowned street festivals. Celebrations include parading dancers embellished in traditional flamboyant costumes, delicious cultural street food and steel drum bands. The lively spirit continues into the evening where live music is performed in surrounding parks, all in which build up to the excitement of the Notting Hill Grand Finale Parade. If you are looking to get your children involved in the festivities, Sunday welcomes a slightly smaller crowd, perfect for a family day out.
History – Dating back to 1959, Human Rights Activist Claudia Jones spotted the opportunity to bring the communities of London together and embrace diversity by organising a broadcasted indoor ‘Caribbean Carnival’ at St. Pancras Town Hall. The festival moved onto the streets of Notting Hill in 1966, evolving into the famous carnival it is today!
When and where – The Carnival takes place on Sunday 25th and Monday 26th August, spreading over the Bank Holiday Weekend. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is home to the festivities; most common areas including Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park.
Top tips for getting there – The first tip for your travels is to plan your route ahead and keep an eye on TFL for updates. Surrounding tube stations become very congested and often incur restrictions, so it’s always wise to consider whether the closest stations can be avoided. Secondly, arrive early to beat the crowds and of course wear comfortable footwear so you can dance into the evening.
